Carrizalillo is a small cove ten minutes west of Zicatela, reached down a long flight of steps, and it is the answer to what a beginner does in a town famous for the opposite. Sand, breaking left and right on a southwest swell with a north-easterly offshore, and good at every stage of the tide.
June gives eleven clean days out of thirty, twelve blown out and seven too small. It is a working month rather than a spectacular one, and for learning that is the right shape.
The cove has rocks at its edges and rips running out of it, which is why a school picks the middle of the bay and why swimming out of position matters more here than on an open beach. The bottom where you surf is sand.
It is also small and popular, and it fills. Fifty people in a bay built for fifteen is a normal morning in season, and the early session is worth the alarm.
