October and March: the two months regulars aim for

December and January have the best swell and every bit of the crowd that comes with it. October and March have nearly the same wave without the peak season.

Morocco's surf season runs October to April. Inside that window nobody books evenly, and the gap between the busiest month and the one next door is not paid for in wave quality.

Marchgood1.8 mmediummedium

Twenty centimetres of swell separate October from November. A whole category of crowding and pricing separates them too.

November is an excellent surf month. It is simply not a secret: it opens the high season, and the good camps want six to eight weeks' notice.

Crowding is a technical variable

On a point break like Anchor Point (rated 4.9, flagged at maximum crowd factor) how many waves you catch depends more on how many people are on the peak than on how well you surf. At equal swell, fifteen people and forty are not the same session.

That is where an October or March trip is won: not in size, in waves ridden.

What each one gives you

October: the water is still 21 °C, its yearly high alongside September, and the autumn swell has arrived. It is the most comfortable month of the season.

March: the water is down to 18 °C and the days are lengthening. The swell stays consistent and the winter crowd has gone. This is the month of long sessions.

Before you choose

  • Neither is a beginner month: both target intermediate to advanced.
  • A 3/2 is necessary in March, comfortable in October.
  • December and January remain better on raw consistency. If you come once and the budget allows, take them.

Frequently asked

Which months are genuinely quiet?

May and June: low crowds, low prices. But the swell falls to 1.0 then 0.7 metres: those are beginner months, not quiet months for experienced surfers.

What about August, if it is flat?

August is the busiest and most expensive month of the year, between Moroccan and European school holidays, for 0.9 metres of swell. It is the worst trade on the calendar.

How far ahead should I book?

For October and March, a few weeks. For November to January, six to eight.

All twelve months are in the seasons guide.
