Pico de Loro is a reef twenty minutes along the coast from Nuquí, on a southwest swell with an easterly offshore, best around mid tide. It is very consistent, and it is uncrowded even when it is working.
March is its month: sixteen clean days out of thirty, thirteen blown out, one too small. That is a genuinely good figure, better than anything in Portugal and on a par with Zicatela's November, and it belongs to a reef almost nobody surfs.
It is also five out of ten for difficulty, which is the same number Zicatela carries and the highest on this coast. Rocks are the named hazard, on a reef, on a coastline reached by light aircraft. Nothing about that combination is forgiving, and it is why this entry has no beginner wave rather than a badly chosen one.
