March belongs to Pico de Loro, and its figures are the best on this coast by a distance: sixteen clean days out of thirty, thirteen blown out, one too small. That is a genuinely strong number by any country's standard, better than anything Portugal returns, and it belongs to a reef almost nobody has surfed.

Look at what the three numbers say together. One day too small in a month means the swell is never the problem here. Thirteen blown out means the wind is, always, and March is simply when it interferes least. The reef takes south-west swell with an easterly offshore and it is very consistent, so the question is never whether there is a wave, only whether the sky is standing in front of it.

It is also five out of ten for difficulty, the same figure Zicatela carries, on a coast reached by light aircraft. The month is excellent and the wave is not forgiving, and both of those are true at once.

Learning in March

  • For learning : Off season

No, and March least of all. The best month on this coast belongs to the hardest wave on it.

For an experienced surfer

  • Surf : Excellent

The month to come, and the only one where the odds are on your side. Reef, rocks, and nobody else in the water.

Where these figures come from

Air, rain and sunshine: WMO / NOAA 1991-2020 normals for Agadir Al Massira, a station some twenty kilometres inland and so a little warmer than the coast in summer. Swell, period and share of workable wind: Swell Archive and surf-forecast. Water temperature: seatemperature.org and weather-and-climate. Crowds and prices are an editorial judgement, not a measurement.
