Surfing in Colombia in February

Surfing in Colombia in February

February is the reef's shoulder, and the month to sort out how you are actually getting to the Chocó.

  • Water temp.
    27 °C
  • For learning
    Off season
  • The month
    Very good

Conditions in February

  • Water temp. : 27 °C
  • Wetsuit : Shorty or 2 mm

February holds January's pattern with slightly steadier air, and Pico de Loro starts putting its better mornings together ahead of March.

It is also the month to be honest about access, because that is the thing that decides a Chocó trip more often than the forecast does. There is no road. You fly forty minutes from Medellín to a strip in the jungle and continue by boat, the lodges arrange the whole chain, and there is no sensible way to improvise it. Comparing a price here with a price on a coast road in Nicaragua is comparing two different products.

The water is at 27°C, which it has been for three months and will be for three more.

Learning in February

  • For learning : Off season

No. The absence of a beginner wave here is a fact about the coast, not a gap in what has been written down.

For an experienced surfer

  • Surf : Very good

Building towards March. If the dates are movable, move them two weeks later.

Where these figures come from

Air, rain and sunshine: WMO / NOAA 1991-2020 normals for Agadir Al Massira, a station some twenty kilometres inland and so a little warmer than the coast in summer. Swell, period and share of workable wind: Swell Archive and surf-forecast. Water temperature: seatemperature.org and weather-and-climate. Crowds and prices are an editorial judgement, not a measurement.
