Surfing in Colombia in January

January is in the Chocó's dry-ish season, which on this coast means it rains slightly less than the rest of the year.

January sits in the stretch from December to March when the Chocó gets marginally less rain than usual. Usual is more than ten metres a year, among the highest anywhere people live, so the difference is one a local notices and a visitor mostly does not.

For the surf that stretch matters in one direction only. Pico de Loro, the reef twenty minutes down the coast, breaks on almost anything and loses its days to wind rather than to swell, so a period of steadier weather is exactly what it wants. Nuquí itself, the left point at the river mouth, needs a real southern swell to stand up at all, and January is not the month that brings one.

The water is at 27°C and will be at 28° in May and back at 27° in December. Across the whole year it moves barely a degree, which makes it the one thing here that never enters a decision.

Learning in January

  • For learning : Off season

No, and that is true of all twelve months here. Both breaks name rocks, the reef is as hard as Zicatela, and the nearest hospital is a flight away.

For an experienced surfer

  • Surf : Good

The reef, or nothing. The point will be flat and the trip is decided by whether the wind gives Pico de Loro its mornings.

Where these figures come from

Air, rain and sunshine: WMO / NOAA 1991-2020 normals for Agadir Al Massira, a station some twenty kilometres inland and so a little warmer than the coast in summer. Swell, period and share of workable wind: Swell Archive and surf-forecast. Water temperature: seatemperature.org and weather-and-climate. Crowds and prices are an editorial judgement, not a measurement.
