July starts the season this coast is genuinely known for, and it has nothing to do with surfing. Humpback whales travel about eight thousand kilometres from Antarctic waters to give birth in the warm shallows of the Colombian Pacific, and they arrive in July and stay until October. The Ensenada de Utría, the calm cove between Nuquí and Bahía Solano, is where a large part of that happens.
Saying so on a surf page is not a change of subject. A coast whose better wave gives two clean days out of thirty in its best month is a coast where the question of what else there is has to be answered, and here the answer is unusually good. Most visitors in these four months are here for the whales, and the surf is what some of them do in the mornings.
The southern swell is still arriving, so the point keeps having its occasional days, and the rain is at full volume.
