Where to surf in July

Every country whose season we have recorded, ranked for July, with the water you would be getting in.

July is the most clear-cut month of the year. Five countries are at their peak, Costa Rica, Nicaragua, South Africa, Mozambique and Sri Lanka, and not one of them is in Europe. Every Atlantic coast sits below them, from Portugal to the Canaries, and Morocco is at its floor. The water runs from 17° at J-Bay to 29° in Costa Rica, with Mozambique at 24° in between: the same rating on three coasts and twelve degrees of difference in what you wear to use it.

Verdicts are read from published surf guides and signed by us. Temperatures are monthly means published for one named break per country, not an average of a coastline. Swell height is left out on purpose: no source publishes it month by month for all of these coasts, and a figure measured one way here and modelled another way there would not compare.
