Surfing in Mexico in July

Surfing in Mexico in July

July is when Zicatela stops being a wave you decide about and becomes one that decides about you.

  • The month
    Very good

July is deep in the southern swell season. The Southern Ocean is at full output eight thousand kilometres away, the pulses arrive with long periods, and the sand bottom at Puerto Escondido takes them in deep water and throws the whole thing up at once.

The country page puts it plainly and it is worth repeating on the month that earns it: this is not a place to progress. Zicatela in July is an experts' wave in a region full of approachable ones, and the classic mistake is booking the town because of the name and finding the beach unusable for the entire week. Nothing about the wave is gradual, and the currents that come with a big July swell are the reason the town has lifeguards on that stretch.

The water hits 30°C on both coasts this month, the one time of year the north and the south read the same. Boardshorts everywhere, and that is the last simple thing about July here.

Learning in July

  • For learning : Good

The cove or nothing. If a trip is being built around somebody learning, build it around Sayulita instead.

Where a beginner goes in July

These spots are reachable all year. What the month changes is the size of the waves, not the access.

For an experienced surfer

  • Surf : Very good

The wave people come to Mexico for, at its most serious. Long period, plenty of size, and no margin.

Where these figures come from

Air, rain and sunshine: WMO / NOAA 1991-2020 normals for Agadir Al Massira, a station some twenty kilometres inland and so a little warmer than the coast in summer. Swell, period and share of workable wind: Swell Archive and surf-forecast. Water temperature: seatemperature.org and weather-and-climate. Crowds and prices are an editorial judgement, not a measurement.
