Surfing in Mexico in October

Surfing in Mexico in October

October is the crossover, and the one month of the year Mexico does not make you choose a coast.

  • For learning
    Good
  • The month
    Excellent

October is the month both halves of the country work at once. The southern swell is still reaching Oaxaca as its season closes, and the Nayarit coast has arrived at its best month of the year: Punta Sayulita and San Pancho both return nineteen clean days out of thirty in October, the highest figures on either Mexican coast.

That the two north-coast breaks report identical numbers is not a coincidence and not a claim about the waves. They are ten minutes apart and read one cell of a forecast grid. What the figure describes is the stretch of coast, and the stretch of coast in October is as good as it gets.

For anybody choosing between the two Mexicos, October removes the decision and replaces it with a different one: the rains are ending, the crowds have not arrived, and the two coasts are nine hundred kilometres and a two-hour flight apart. Doing both in one trip is a real option this month and a bad idea in any other.

Learning in October

  • For learning : Good

Workable on the north coast, where the waves have shape without the summer's weight. Oaxaca is still closing down from its big season.

Where a beginner goes in October

These spots are reachable all year. What the month changes is the size of the waves, not the access.

For an experienced surfer

  • Surf : Excellent

Nineteen clean days out of thirty on the Nayarit points, and Zicatela still running. The best fortnight of the Mexican year.

Where these figures come from

Air, rain and sunshine: WMO / NOAA 1991-2020 normals for Agadir Al Massira, a station some twenty kilometres inland and so a little warmer than the coast in summer. Swell, period and share of workable wind: Swell Archive and surf-forecast. Water temperature: seatemperature.org and weather-and-climate. Crowds and prices are an editorial judgement, not a measurement.
