Surfing in Iceland in July

Surfing in Iceland in July

July has the warmest water of the Icelandic year at 12°C and the least swell to use it on. It is a month for comfort rather than for waves.

Conditions in July

  • Water temp. : 12 °C
  • Wetsuit : 5/4 mm, hood, gloves and boots

July is the bottom of the swell curve. The Atlantic is quiet and the systems that feed this coast sit further north, so days pass with nothing on the forecast until a small pulse arrives and everyone is in the water for it.

12°C does not change the wetsuit, it changes how long you last in it: four hours instead of ninety minutes. Put eighteen to twenty hours of daylight on top and July gives you more comfortable time in the sea than any other month of the year, and the least to do with it. Which of those two matters more to you is the whole decision about coming in July.

Learning in July

The easiest conditions of the year, and the ones a school can run week after week. Small, long and as warm as Iceland gets.

For an experienced surfer

  • Surf : Good

The quietest month for swell. Build the trip around something else you came for and treat a session as luck.

Where these figures come from

Air, rain and sunshine: WMO / NOAA 1991-2020 normals for Agadir Al Massira, a station some twenty kilometres inland and so a little warmer than the coast in summer. Swell, period and share of workable wind: Swell Archive and surf-forecast. Water temperature: seatemperature.org and weather-and-climate. Crowds and prices are an editorial judgement, not a measurement.
