December sits at the peak of the storm season. The lows do not stop, every side of Reykjanes gets something, and the sun is above the horizon for four to five hours. Both of those are true at once, and that is the month.
Everything around the surf is at its most demanding. The water is at 7°C and still falling, the wind is at its strongest of the year, and snow closes roads that were clear the day before. The tide still moves more than four and a half metres twice a day, so a break rearranges itself between the time you check it and the time you get there. None of that makes the waves worse. It makes reaching them a different problem from the one most surf trips are planned around.
