July is the bottom of the swell year in Senegal. The south shore is still the working side and it is working gently, which is the honest way to describe a month whose reefs are mostly too small to break.

The rain is heavier than June and the humidity is real. It comes in the afternoon and it does not usually cost a morning session.

This is when the country is at its cheapest and emptiest, and when Yoff and the beaches carry the week entirely. Anybody arriving in July expecting Ngor has read the wrong month.

Small, warm, forgiving and cheap. If the trip is about learning, this is one of the two best months.

Where a beginner goes in July

These spots are reachable all year. What the month changes is the size of the waves, not the access.
