Conditions in December

  • Water temp. : 24 °C
  • Wetsuit : Shorty or 2 mm

December runs the north shore at full size. The North Atlantic is in winter, the swell arrives regularly, and Ngor is doing what it is known for.

Two things change from November. The water keeps falling towards the March floor and most people move into a 3/2 during the month. And the visitors arrive: Dakar is a short flight from Europe and the holidays bring the year's second crowd, which on a peninsula with four documented breaks is noticeable.

The wind is the recurring caveat and it does not go away because the swell is good. Even now, the best days are the ones a forecast picked out three days earlier.

Learning in December

  • For learning : Good

Not a learning month. The swell is up, the water is cooling, and the beaches are the only sensible option.

Where a beginner goes in December

These spots are reachable all year. What the month changes is the size of the waves, not the access.

For an experienced surfer

  • Surf : Very good

Full winter on the north shore. Bring rubber, watch the forecast, and get in before the holiday arrivals.

Where these figures come from

Air, rain and sunshine: WMO / NOAA 1991-2020 normals for Agadir Al Massira, a station some twenty kilometres inland and so a little warmer than the coast in summer. Swell, period and share of workable wind: Swell Archive and surf-forecast. Water temperature: seatemperature.org and weather-and-climate. Crowds and prices are an editorial judgement, not a measurement.
