May is the month the south shore wakes up. The first south-west swells of the southern winter reach Dakar, and Ouakam starts working: a choice of left and right reefs under the mosque, wanting a north-easterly offshore that the dry season is still supplying.
It is Ouakam's own best month, and it is worth being precise about what that means. This is an inconsistent break with no seasonal pattern, and its best month is clean roughly five days out of thirty. May is when it is most likely to be on, not when it is likely to be on.
The water is comfortably back above twenty-four degrees and climbing. For most people that flips the calculation: smaller waves, but a week in the water rather than a week in rubber.
