July works for a specific reason. The month brings back-to-back swells with a good period, which is what joins the sections at an east-facing point. That is the difference between a big day and a long ride, and it is why July and August are named ahead of months with similar wave heights.
The winter offshores are still in place and the Southern Ocean is still producing. The water is at 17°C, the coldest reading of the year at J-Bay, which the local advice puts at a 3/2 fully sealed and visitors often make a 4/3. The Eastern Cape is busy now, by South African standards.
