May is the first of the four peak-season months. The Southern Ocean storms are now tracking where the Eastern Cape needs them, and the swells arrive with the length that turns the J-Bay point from a series of sections into one wave.

The westerly offshores that define a good day here are at their most frequent in the same months. That pairing, groundswell from the south-west and wind from the west, is what a J-Bay trip is waiting for, and from May it happens week after week rather than once a fortnight. The water is at 18°C, which locals surf in a 3/2 and visitors often in a 4/3.

Learning in May

Not the Eastern Cape. If you are learning and your dates are May, Cape Town's sheltered corners are a better answer than J-Bay.

Where a beginner goes in May

These spots are reachable all year. What the month changes is the size of the waves, not the access.

For an experienced surfer

  • Surf : Excellent

The season starting properly, and the quietest of the four peak months. If you can only take one week in winter, take this one.

Where these figures come from

Air, rain and sunshine: WMO / NOAA 1991-2020 normals for Agadir Al Massira, a station some twenty kilometres inland and so a little warmer than the coast in summer. Swell, period and share of workable wind: Swell Archive and surf-forecast. Water temperature: seatemperature.org and weather-and-climate. Crowds and prices are an editorial judgement, not a measurement.
