June is the month everything at Jeffreys Bay is planned around, and the only month of the South African year with published figures behind it. J-Bay is clean eighteen days out of thirty in June, blown out nine, and too small the other three. Three days in five is a high number anywhere; on a point that needs both swell and wind to agree, it is what makes this the peak.
The mechanism is at its best now. Southern Ocean lows arrive back to back, so the swells have both size and period, and the winter westerlies hold the point open. The water is at 18°C, and the air is a South African winter, which is cool and dry rather than cold.
