August has both of the Chocó's seasons running at once. The southern swell keeps reaching the coast, the humpbacks are in the bays with calves, and it rains most days.
The rain is the thing to be clear about rather than apologetic for. More than ten metres a year falls here, which is among the highest totals of any inhabited place on earth, and it does not stop in any month. That is the reason there is no road, the reason the forest reaches the water, and ultimately the reason the line-ups are empty. Anybody who has understood that before booking has a good week; anybody expecting a tropical dry season has a bad one.
Between the whales, the rivers behind the beach and a point that works when the swell is big enough, August is a full week that happens to include surfing rather than a surf week.
