October closes both of the Chocó's seasons. The humpbacks head back towards Antarctica through the month, the last of the southern swell reaches the point, and by the end of it the coast has returned to what it is for most of the year: rain, forest, rivers and a reef waiting on the wind.
It is a good month to be clear about what the quiet half means here, because it is not the same as off-season elsewhere. Pico de Loro is too small on one day in thirty in its best month, so there is almost always a wave on the reef; what there is not, from now until February, is much prospect of the sky leaving it alone.
The water is at 28°C and heading for 27°, which is the entire annual movement and is mentioned only because the column exists.
