April is when the Southern Ocean starts producing and the swell begins reaching a coast that faces south-west. That matters for Nuquí, the left point at the river mouth, because swell is the only thing standing between it and a wave: it is filed reliable, it is very rarely crowded, and it is too small on the overwhelming majority of days outside this window.

Which sets up the shape of the Chocó year. The reef spends the first quarter waiting for the wind and the point spends most of the year waiting for the swell, and the two constraints do not lift at the same time. April is the handover between them, with the reef past its best and the point not yet at its own.

The rain steps up from here, and it does not step down again until December. The water reaches 28°C, its high, which is one degree above its low.

Learning in April

  • For learning : Off season

No. The swell arriving is the thing that makes the point work and the thing that puts it further out of reach.

For an experienced surfer

  • Surf : Very good

A month between two waves. Take the reef on a settled morning and watch for the first southern swell to change the subject.

Where these figures come from

Air, rain and sunshine: WMO / NOAA 1991-2020 normals for Agadir Al Massira, a station some twenty kilometres inland and so a little warmer than the coast in summer. Swell, period and share of workable wind: Swell Archive and surf-forecast. Water temperature: seatemperature.org and weather-and-climate. Crowds and prices are an editorial judgement, not a measurement.
