Surfing in Biarritz
Biarritz is where surfing arrived in Europe in the 1950s, and the reason it took hold here rather than forty minutes north is the shape of the coast. The town sits on headlands, so its beaches are sheltered from swell that closes out the open Landes.

La Côte des Basques is the one that matters. It is the easiest wave on this coast outside a river mouth, and the longboard beach the whole city learns on. It works best at low tide, and the beach disappears after mid tide, which is the thing to know before walking down.
La Grande Plage in front of the casino is the other option, and busier for it.
