Hossegor sits above the Capbreton canyon, a trench that runs close to shore and delivers open-ocean swell to a beach without the shelf that would slow it down. That is why the waves here are so much heavier than the flat coast behind them suggests.

La Graviere is the wave that reputation is built on, a short square barrel, and La Nord is the more workable neighbour: very reliable, and rarely crowded.
Read October rather than the reputation. La Nord that month is clean fifteen days out of thirty, blown out fourteen, and too small only one or two. The swell is a given on this coast; the wind is the entire game.
There is no beginner break here, and inventing one would help nobody: for a first week, Biarritz is forty minutes south. Biarritz is forty minutes south and is where a first week belongs.
