J-Bay is the bay's own reading, three kilometres down from the point, over a mix of sand and reef. It wants a south swell with a west-north-westerly offshore, a different window from Supertubes, and that difference is what makes having both worth something.
It carries the strongest single figure on this coast: eighteen clean days out of thirty in June, nine blown out, two or three too small. Nothing else here manages that much clean water, and it is why a week in June is worth the water temperature.
Sharks and rocks are both named, and the sections here forgive more than the point without being gentle. An intermediate gets a good week; a beginner belongs in False Bay or on the Durban beachfront.
