Surfing in Mundaka

Mundaka is a fishing village on the Urdaibai estuary, and its wave is one of the best left-handers in Europe: a river break peeling off the sandbar the estuary builds, on a north-westerly swell with a southerly offshore, at low tide on the drop.

It is the hardest and busiest left in Spain, which for a wave of this reputation is not a surprise. January gives eleven clean days out of thirty, thirteen blown out, seven too small.

Two things to plan around. Summer is mostly flat, so this is an autumn and winter trip. And the sandbar is built by a river, which means the wave changes with what the estuary does: it is not a fixture, it is a season.

Welcome home.
