Welcome to Zarautz

Surfing in Zarautz

Zarautz is a two-and-a-half kilometre beach twenty minutes west of San Sebastián, and it is where most of the Basque Country learns. Sand, breaking left and right, best on a north-north-westerly swell with a southerly offshore, and best at high tide.

Its December figure is the one to know: fifteen clean days out of thirty, ahead of Ribeira d'Ilhas in Portugal and ahead of Anchor Point in Morocco. A learners' beach in northern Spain is cleaner in midwinter than the famous points of two warmer countries, which is not what anyone expects and is exactly what a comparison is for.

The cost is company. It is crowded whenever it works, and what you watch for is the crowd and the water quality rather than anything on the seabed.

Welcome home.
