Surf camps in Midigama

Midigama sells rooms by the reefs, not packages. Which house suits you depends almost entirely on whether you can already stand up.

Published means a price the operator shows on its own site. Rooms follow when it publishes a grid of them, and the sheet says so when it does not. The rest of our inventory is unread, not rejected.

Neither house in Midigama sells an all-inclusive week. Both rent you a room, and lessons and meals are bought separately, so you put the week together yourself. That fits the village: four reefs along two kilometres of coast with hardly anyone on them, where people come to surf rather than to be looked after.

Cocoplant has eleven rooms on three floors round a garden, a minute's walk from Plantations, which gives five good days out of seven in January with three people on the peak. A Budget room for two starts at US$16 a night, a ninety-minute private lesson is US$25 with the board for the day, and the in-house restaurant runs from breakfast to dinner. Only the Deluxe rooms have air conditioning. It is a house for someone who already stands up on reef.

Tiger Villa has five rooms with their own bathrooms and a shared kitchen, and serves no meals: €140 a week for a room for two, €107 alone. Its school, Shaggy's, sells lessons one at a time or in blocks of three or five, priced in rupees. A complete beginner goes by tuk-tuk to the sand at Weligama, fifteen minutes away, and comes back to Lazy Left, the gentlest of the four reefs, once standing is no longer the problem. Of the two, this is the one that takes a first-timer.

After dark Midigama has two or three places to eat and a string of guesthouses. For a couple on a tight budget that makes a quiet week. Alone and looking for company, sleep in Ahangama or Weligama and come here by tuk-tuk to surf.
