Surfing in Midigama

Midigama sits between Ahangama and Weligama, minutes from each, and the coast train stops here: the line down from Colombo runs beside the water for the last stretch and costs a fraction of a transfer.

Four reefs break across two kilometres, all on the same south-south-westerly swell and the same north-easterly offshore. Lazy Left peels, Rams Right is short and shallow, Plantations gives five days of a week in January and still has room, and Coconuts closes the run at the eastern end.

None of them is a learning wave: reef throughout, rocks in all four line-ups. Weligama is fifteen minutes away for that.

And there is nothing here in the evening. No beach, two or three kitchens, a scattering of guesthouses. That is a fault if you came to meet people, and it is exactly what the people who keep coming back are here for: get up, look at which of the four is working, go.

Welcome home.

Why Midigama?

Four reefs, and room on all of them

What Midigama has that the others do not is neither size nor shape: it is room.

Plantations gives five surfable days out of seven in January, level with The Rock, and almost nobody is on it. On this coast a break that good normally comes with a queue. Here four reefs share two kilometres and you pick.

The price is double and worth saying: it breaks over reef, so it is no place for a first week, and nothing happens after sunset. The people who come back come for that.

Where is Midigama?

Getting there

140 min from Colombo Bandaranaike (CMB) (CMB)

Midigama sits between Ahangama and Weligama, a few minutes from each along the coast road, and the railway stops here as well. That is worth knowing: the train down from Colombo runs beside the water for the last stretch and costs a fraction of a transfer.

The four reefs are spread over about two kilometres, which means you can look at all of them before deciding, and walk to whichever is working.
