Welcome to Midigama

Surfing in Midigama

Midigama is the village people come back to. Four separate reefs break within about two kilometres of each other, all on the same south-southwest swell and the same north-easterly offshore: Lazy Left, Rams Right, Plantations and Coconuts.

  • 140 minfrom Colombo Bandaranaike (CMB)

What sets it apart is not the size, it is the crowd. surf-forecast describes three of the four as rarely or very rarely crowded, on a coast where the well-known peaks fill up as soon as a swell is forecast. Plantations is clean roughly three days in four in January and still has room.

It is not a village to learn in. Every one of the four breaks over reef and every guide lists rocks in the line-up. Weligama is fifteen minutes east and is the place for a first week.

Welcome home.

Why Midigama?

Four reefs, and room on all of them

The thing Midigama has is not size or shape, it is space. surf-forecast describes Lazy Left as rarely crowded, Rams Right as very rarely, Coconuts as unlikely to be crowded even when the surf is up, and Plantations as having relatively few surfers on it even on good days.

Read that against Plantations' other figure, clean three days in four in January, the same as the busiest wave on the coast. A break that good is normally a break with a queue. Here it is not, and that is the whole case for staying in a village with no beach to speak of and four reefs instead.

The trade is the bottom. All four break over reef, all four list rocks, and none of them is a place to learn on.

Where is Midigama?

Getting there

140 min from Colombo Bandaranaike (CMB) (CMB)

Midigama sits between Ahangama and Weligama, a few minutes from each along the coast road, and the railway stops here as well. That is worth knowing: the train down from Colombo runs beside the water for the last stretch and costs a fraction of a transfer.

The four reefs are spread over about two kilometres, which means you can look at all of them before deciding, and walk to whichever is working.
