Surfing in Hiriketiya
Hiriketiya is a small horseshoe bay near Dikwella, at the eastern end of the south coast, and its shape is the point. The headlands wrap the swell, so the bay keeps working on days the open beaches have closed out, which is what makes it the fallback of this coast.

There are two waves in it. The bay itself breaks lefts and rights, with sand on the right where the schools work and rocks further into the line-up. The left reef on the western side is a different proposition, and it draws a crowd when it is on.
It is the most developed village of the five, which cuts both ways: easy to stay in, and busy in the water whenever the surf is up.

Why Hiriketiya?
The bay that keeps working
The shape is the reason to come. Those two headlands wrap the swell, so Hiriketiya holds a rideable wave on days the open beaches have closed out. On a coast where a big south-west swell shuts down the beach breaks and leaves only reef, a sheltered bay with sand on one side of it is the fallback the whole region lacks.
There are two waves in the cove, and they suit different people. The right, over sand, is where the schools work. The left reef on the western side is a proper wave with rocks in the line-up, and it draws a crowd the moment it is on.
What you trade for the shelter is quiet. It is the most developed of the five, and busy in the water whenever the surf is up.

Hiriketiya is a cove beside Dikwella, at the eastern end of the south coast and three to three and a half hours from Colombo, about 200 km. It is the furthest of the four southern villages and the least on the way to anywhere, which has kept it small even as it has become fashionable.
The bay is a horseshoe perhaps three hundred metres across, with a headland at each end. You can see the whole thing from the road, which is unusual here and makes checking it trivial.
