Welcome to Weligama

Surfing in Weligama

Weligama is a wide sandy bay on the main south coast road, two to two and a half hours from Colombo on the expressway. It is the shortest transfer of the five villages, and that explains a good deal of what it became.

The bay breaks mostly left, over sand, and works at every stage of the tide, which almost nothing else here manages. In January, count on four days of a week. No reef under the inside. Everything else follows from that.

When the bay stops being enough, Main Point closes the eastern end over reef.

Evenings are lively without being loud: a beach club for the sundowners, restaurants set on the rocks with the water underneath, and enough people in season that you never eat alone. Less of a party than Ahangama, more going on than Midigama.

Welcome home.

Why Weligama?

The bay that teaches the coast

Everything in favour of Weligama fits in one sentence: there is no reef under the inside.

Sand, a left that peels, every stage of the tide, four surfable days out of seven in January. Almost nothing else on the island can say that, and it is why every school on this coast works this bay.

What comes with it: a crowd, but a crowd at your level, which is far easier than a crowd of locals on a reef. And water quality is the weak point of the bay rather than of the wave. For a first week in Sri Lanka it is still the simplest answer.

Where is Weligama?

Getting there

135 min from Colombo Bandaranaike (CMB) (CMB)

Weligama is a wide bay on the main south coast road, with Mirissa about ten minutes east and Galle forty minutes west. It is the shortest transfer of the five villages, two to two and a half hours from Colombo on the expressway, and that alone explains a good deal of why it became what it is.

The bay is long enough that the schools spread out along it, and shallow enough that the inside is standing depth well out from the sand.
