Welcome to Weligama

Surfing in Weligama

Weligama is a wide sandy bay, and it is the reason most people's first Sri Lankan wave happens here. The beach break runs mostly left, works at every stage of the tide, and is clean about half the time in January. There is no reef under the inside, which is the whole argument.

The bay has a second answer for when the first gets boring: Main Point, a reef at the eastern end with rocks in the line-up and a crowd on good days.

Two things to know before booking. The bay is busy, in the water and on the sand, because every school on the coast works here. And pollution is the hazard surf-forecast lists for the break, which is a bay-shaped problem rather than a wave-shaped one.

Season November to April.

Welcome home.

Why Weligama?

The bay that teaches the coast

Every argument for Weligama is the same argument: there is no reef under the inside. The bottom is sand, the wave breaks mostly left, and it is surfable at every stage of the tide, which almost nothing else here manages. In January it is clean about half the time.

That is why every school on this coast works this bay, and why the water is crowded in a way the surf statistics do not capture. The crowd is beginners, which is easier than a crowd of locals on a reef, but it is still a crowd.

Two honest caveats. The wave is soft, so people outgrow it inside a week, which is what Main Point at the eastern end is for. And water quality is the hazard the relevé names for the bay, not for the wave.

Where is Weligama?

Getting there

135 min from Colombo Bandaranaike (CMB) (CMB)

Weligama is a wide bay on the main south coast road, with Mirissa about ten minutes east and Galle forty minutes west. It is the shortest transfer of the five villages, two to two and a half hours from Colombo on the expressway, and that alone explains a good deal of why it became what it is.

The bay is long enough that the schools spread out along it, and shallow enough that the inside is standing depth well out from the sand.
