Surfing in Arugam Bay
Arugam Bay sits on the east coast, and that is the whole reason to come. Sri Lanka runs two monsoons that never overlap: when the south coast stops in May, this side starts and holds until September. Six to seven hours from Colombo, across the middle of the island.

Four points spread over a dozen kilometres, so you do not walk between them. A tuk-tuk is part of the trip, and the camps run the shuttles.
The water sits at 28 to 30 °C all year. No wetsuit, a rash vest against the sun, and sessions that end when you decide to get out rather than when you start shivering.
The town runs on the season and closes after it. In July and August the main street is a row of bars full of surfers from everywhere, and somebody arriving alone is not alone by the first evening. By October half of it has shut. Come in May or September for the wave and the quiet; come in August if you also came for the people.

Why Arugam Bay?
The other season
Sri Lanka has two seasons that never meet, and Arugam Bay is the one that answers when the other has gone dead. May to September, while the south coast is flat and grey, this side works.
That is the only reason to drive six hours, and it is a good one: a European summer can be surfed in Sri Lanka, which no other village on the island allows.
The Main Point made the name, and it is also the busiest and the only one over coral. The other three points are the reason to stay: Whiskey Point, Peanut Farm and Elephant Rock are empty even at the height of the season, because almost nobody drives past the first one.

Getting there

Arugam Bay is on the east coast, about 320 km from Colombo and six to seven hours by road across the interior rather than down the coast. Published estimates run from six to nine hours; treat it as a travel day and do not book an evening arrival.
The four breaks are spread over roughly twelve kilometres of coast, so unlike the southern villages this is not a place you walk between waves. A tuk-tuk or a scooter is part of the trip.
