Surfing in Arugam Bay
Arugam Bay is on the east coast, and that is the whole reason it exists as a destination. Sri Lanka has two monsoons and two seasons that do not overlap: when the south coast stops working in May, this side starts, and it runs to September.

Four points are worth the drive, spread over roughly twelve kilometres. The Main Point is the famous one, a right over coral that gets crowded and is clean most often in November. Whiskey Point, Peanut Farm and Elephant Rock are the reason to stay: surf-forecast calls them rarely, uncrowded and never crowded respectively, which on a wave this well known is unusual.
Two of them, Whiskey Point and Elephant Rock, work for someone still learning. The Main Point, over coral, does not.

Why Arugam Bay?
The other season
Sri Lanka has two monsoons and they do not overlap. When the south coast stops working in May, this side starts, and it runs to September. That is the entire reason to come here rather than anywhere else on the island, and it makes Arugam Bay the answer to a question the other four villages cannot answer at all.
The Main Point is what the place is famous for, a right over coral that gets crowded. The other three are the reason to stay: surf-forecast calls Whiskey Point very rarely crowded, Peanut Farm uncrowded even when working, and Elephant Rock never crowded because of how remote it is.
One figure keeps the whole thing honest. In its best month, Whiskey Point is too small 83 % of the time. The east coast is a real season, not a long one.

Getting there

Arugam Bay is on the east coast, about 320 km from Colombo and six to seven hours by road across the interior rather than down the coast. Published estimates run from six to nine hours; treat it as a travel day and do not book an evening arrival.
The four breaks are spread over roughly twelve kilometres of coast, so unlike the southern villages this is not a place you walk between waves. A tuk-tuk or a scooter is part of the trip.
