The camp

Ocean Surf Camp is a school first: Kiyas and his team, with the shop and board hire on Main Street. You sleep at Pearl of the Bay, a building of balconies round a planted courtyard, in an air-conditioned twin with its own bathroom and hot water. The package adds breakfast in the hotel restaurant, a board, a rash vest and rides to the spots, and nothing more: no yoga, no dinners, no timetable.

The lesson is the product. Five lessons over three nights, ten over six, fifteen over nine, with one-on-one guidance promised, and the work starts on the sand with pop-up drills. The school does not say how many students each instructor takes, so ask: that number is what the package is worth. The water stays between 28 and 30 °C all year, and a rash vest is all you wear.

The rest of the day is yours. Lunch and dinner happen in town, and in July or August the main street will find you company without being asked. If you are travelling alone and want a ready-made group, a house that serves dinner will suit you better.

Settle two things before paying: which spots the lessons use, since none are named, and how far the rooms are from the beach, given as beachfront on one page and seven hundred metres on another. The east coast only surfs from May to September, with April and October at the edges. This is a camp for a European summer.

Frequently asked questions

  • Are the lessons really one-on-one?

The camp promises one-on-one guidance without saying how many students each instructor takes, and it sells private sessions of 75 to 90 minutes separately. Ask in writing whether the package lessons are private or in a group: those are two different weeks, at two different prices.

  • Is the room on the beach?

The operator says both: beachfront rooms on one page, seven hundred metres from the beach on another, and seven hundred metres from the Main Point on the hotel's own page. Ask for the address of Pearl of the Bay before you book, especially if you plan to paddle out alone between lessons.

  • What is not included?

Lunch and dinner, yoga, and the transfer from Colombo, which has no listed price. Allow six to eight hours on the road to Arugam Bay, across the island: a full day, and not one to start after an evening landing.
