Wanderlust Surf Camp

The camp

Wanderlust is run by Rebekah and Kutty, a few steps from the beach and just outside the town. Every room has its own bathroom and air conditioning. The room for two has a private terrace, the rooms for three or four have extra-wide bunks built by a local carpenter, and the six-bed dorm has curtained beds with a reading light each. A shared kitchen completes the house.

The camp names the four points it surfs, and that is good news for a beginner. Two are made for you: Whiskey Point, twenty minutes north, works at any tide with nothing on the bottom to catch you, and Elephant Rock is far enough down the track that you often have it to yourself. The Main Point and Peanut Farm wait until you are ready. Two lessons a day, the tuk-tuk, and on some evenings the whole group watches the footage together.

Only breakfast is included. Everything else is cooked in the shared kitchen or found in town, on foot or by tuk-tuk, so a family keeps its own hours.

The room for four is US$2,000 for the week, lessons included for everyone in it. For a family that is the deciding figure, and so is the calendar: the camp surfs from April to October, across the summer school holidays, while the south coast is flat and grey.
