Surfing in Ahangama
Ahangama opens the surf stretch at its western end, between Galle and Weligama, strung along the coast road and the railway. Galle is half an hour away, Midigama a few minutes.

The wave is The Rock, off Kabalana beach: a reef peak breaking both ways and working at any tide. In January, count on five days of a week worth paddling out for, the best figure on the island. The bottom is reef with urchins, which makes it an intermediate spot whatever the brochures say.
The water runs 28 to 30 °C. A rash vest, nothing else.
And this is the village where people go out. Rooftops, cocktail bars facing the sunset, a handful of kitchens worth the walk and cafés that open early. Evenings are livelier here than anywhere else on this coast, and that matters if you are coming for a week on your own.

Ahangama rests on one wave and on its evenings, which is a rare pairing on this coast.
The Rock holds the best month on the island: five surfable days out of seven in January, ahead of Weligama bay and ahead of every point at Arugam Bay. It is a single spot and you should know that going in, but it is the right one.
The village grew around it and became the place people eat and drink along this stretch. For a first Sri Lankan trip where meeting people matters, Ahangama asks less than Midigama and gives more waves than Hiriketiya.

Ahangama is the western end of the surf coast, strung along the coast road and the railway between Galle and Weligama. Galle is about half an hour west, Midigama a few minutes east, and the whole stretch is close enough that people staying here surf all of it.
The wave is offshore from Kabalana beach rather than in front of the village, which matters more than it sounds: you are looking at a reef several hundred metres out, and what is rideable from the sand is not what is rideable from the peak.
