Surfing in Ahangama
Ahangama sits at the western end of the surf stretch, and what it is known for is a single wave: The Rock, the reef off Kabalana beach. It takes a south-southwest swell, it breaks left and right off the same peak, and it works at every stage of the tide, which is rarer here than it sounds.

It is also the most reliable wave on this coast in January, clean roughly three days in four. That is why it gets busy: the guides list it as a beginner spot, and the bottom is reef with urchins. Small days genuinely are approachable. Big days are not, and the difference is not visible from the sand.
The season is the south-west one, November to April. From May the swell moves to the other side of the island.

Why Ahangama?

Thirteen breaks are catalogued on this island and The Rock has the best figure of any of them: clean roughly three days in four in January, against 53 % for Weligama bay in the same month. That is the argument for Ahangama, and it is a narrow one, because it is a single wave.
It cuts the other way too. A reef that works three days in four is a reef everyone is on, and the guides send beginners because the wave is famous rather than because the bottom is forgiving. Urchins over reef is what the relevé says. On a small day it is genuinely approachable; the skill is telling a small day from the sand, and that is not a beginner skill.

Getting there

Ahangama is the western end of the surf coast, strung along the coast road and the railway between Galle and Weligama. Galle is about half an hour west, Midigama a few minutes east, and the whole stretch is close enough that people staying here surf all of it.
The wave is offshore from Kabalana beach rather than in front of the village, which matters more than it sounds: you are looking at a reef several hundred metres out, and what is rideable from the sand is not what is rideable from the peak.
