The camp
Every room at Gota Dagua is named after a beach on this coast. Kabalana, Marissa and Unawatuna are the shared ones, Madiha is a double, and up on the top floor Hiriketeya and Midigama are the superior rooms, with more space and a better view. The house is in the middle of Ahangama, a short walk from the sand, with a pool and a roof that looks out to sea. The team comes from Costa da Caparica, just south of Lisbon, and runs a camp in Tamraght as well.
The week is built around the table. Six dinners served together, three courses each, and the seventh eaten out as a group. On top of that come a Sri Lankan cooking class, a trip to a viewpoint for the sunset and a barbecue with music. A WhatsApp group opens before you fly, so by the Saturday you land you already know a few names.
Lessons are not in the €399. All the kit is yours to use, so if you already surf you take the week as it is and paddle out whenever you like. A beginner adds the five or eight lesson option, whose price is not published, so ask for it before you compare. Lessons happen at Kabalana, a calm beach, and the team takes a tuk-tuk elsewhere when it is not working. The reefs around here carry urchins, so pack reef booties.
This is the one if you are travelling alone, already surf a little, and want your evenings to count as much as your sessions.

Frequently asked questions
Are lessons included?
No. The €399 to €499 per person covers seven nights, seven breakfasts, six dinners, free use of the kit, the activities, linen and cleaning. Lessons come as a five or eight lesson option, and the price is not published, so ask for it before you book.
Am I too old, or not fit enough?
The house sets no upper age limit and no minimum fitness; mention any limitations when you book. Lessons cover four levels, from complete beginner to free surfing, and Kabalana, where they take place, is a calm beach.
How do I get there from the airport?
The house can send a car at €65 each way for up to three people, two and a half to three hours on the road. The week runs Saturday to Saturday, check-in from 3 pm, check-out by 10 am.
