Weligama Bay is a long sandy beach and most people's first Sri Lankan wave. A soft left that starts a long way inside, nothing underfoot, and surfable whatever the tide is doing: on a coast of reefs, it is the only one that can say that.
In January, four days of a week. Fewer than The Rock, but The Rock is not a wave you stand up on for the first time.
It is busy, and it is busy with people at your level: every school on the coast works this bay. A crowd of beginners is far easier to negotiate than a crowd of locals on a reef. The weak point is not the wave, it is the water quality of the bay itself.
