Hiriketiya Bay fits inside a three-hundred-metre horseshoe, and the shape does all the work. The two headlands wrap the swell, so the bay keeps a wave on the days the rest of the coast has shut: it is the fallback for the whole stretch, not just for the village.
It breaks both ways. The sand is on the right, and that is where the schools put their groups; further into the line-up there is rock.
Three hundred metres fills quickly. When it is on, the bay is busy, and that is the only fault of a place without many others.
