The camp

Kaboti Surf is a school in Playa Blanca, at the southern tip of Lanzarote, and that is where you sleep. The waves are in the north. On most days the school minibus drives up to Famara, about an hour away, and brings you back after the session. Weigh that drive before you book: you give up the beach outside your door, and in exchange you get the sunny south coast, its restaurants and the ferry to Fuerteventura.

Famara is three kilometres of sand under the Risco cliff, lefts and rights at every stage of the tide, and the beach the whole island learns on. The swell is nearly always there; the wind decides. In December, its best month, expect two clean days in a week, clean meaning swell the wind has not chopped up, and the trade wind spoils most of the others. The school is not tied to that one beach. It takes the group wherever it is working on the day: Famara most often, otherwise La Santa, El Golfo or the beaches of the south, with the transport included. Groups are split by level, eight to an instructor at most, from first lesson to intermediate, with theory and video review.

There is no camp house. You pick one of three tiers in Playa Blanca: a hostel dorm, a private room in an apartment or hotel, or a villa with a pool. The surfing is the same in all three. No meals are included, so you eat when and where you like among Playa Blanca's restaurants.

The team, Agustin Medinilla, Valentin Gandasegui and Manuel Galdamez, also runs WingFoil Playa Blanca and takes paddleboard and snorkelling trips to Papagayo, so anyone in your group who does not surf has something to do. Evenings are not organised; the island is yours. Camps last two or four nights, longer on request. Right for a short trip with friends who do not all surf. For a week where the wave runs your day, sleep in Caleta de Famara instead.

              Frequently asked questions

              • Do I need to be able to surf already?

No. The camps take every level from first lesson to intermediate, and groups are split by ability, eight to an instructor at most. The minimum age is 12, with a parent or guardian.

              • Can I stay for a week?

The camps on offer are two or four nights. A longer stay is a request to the school, by form or WhatsApp. Dates are flexible: there is no fixed arrival day.

              • Will I be cold?

The wetsuit is provided. The water drops to 18°C in February, its lowest point of the year, and reaches 23°C from August to October. In winter a 4/3 is better for a long session.

              • Is there a group rate?

Yes: 10% off from five people.
