Surfing in Lanzarote

Lanzarote's surf lives on its northern shore, and almost all of it on one beach. Playa de Famara runs about three kilometres under the Risco cliff, breaks left and right over sand, and works at every stage of the tide, which is why every school on the island is based there.

The catch is in the numbers. December is its best month, and the wind takes nineteen days out of thirty. That is the Canaries in one figure: the trade winds that keep the islands consistent all winter are the same ones that flatten the afternoon. Surf early here, or check and wait.

Arrieta, twenty minutes east, is the reef alternative for when Famara is too small or too crowded, and it works far less often.

Welcome home.
