Welcome to Reykjanes

Surfing in Reykjanes

Reykjanes is the peninsula the airport sits on, which makes it the only Icelandic surf that is genuinely easy to reach. Sandvík is twenty minutes from the terminal on the western shore; Þorlákshöfn is an hour away on the south coast.

  • 2spots

You will have both to yourself. That is not a figure of speech here: on an average good day there is nobody in the water at either, and that emptiness is most of what people come for.

It costs something. Sandvík runs strong currents and Þorlákshöfn breaks over rock, in water that stays cold all year, and a long swim in it turns into an emergency within minutes. Neither is a place to learn, and the island does not have one: come with a wetsuit that fits, a forecast you have read properly, and somebody on the beach.

Welcome home.
