Surfing in Tofo

Tofo is a sand road, a market, and a long beach on the Indian Ocean, and it is the only place in Mozambique with waves anybody has documented properly.

  • 2spots

Two breaks share the headland. Praia Tofo is the beach itself, sand, mostly lefts, easy and inconsistent. Tofinho is the point four hundred metres south, a right over beach and rock, harder and more reliable. Both take south-east swell with a south-south-westerly offshore, and both return the same April figure of eleven clean days out of thirty, because at four hundred metres apart they are reading the same cell of the forecast grid.

What the numbers do not show is the emptiness. Tofinho very rarely gets crowded and Praia Tofo is unlikely to be busy even when it is working, which on a coast this warm is unusual enough to be the reason to come. The trade is that eleven clean days out of thirty is a real fraction of a week lost, and there is no second coast to drive to.

Water is warm all year and the wetsuit question does not arise. Sharks and rocks are named at both, and Tofo is better known for whale sharks and manta rays than for anything that worries a surfer: the dive traffic is a large part of what keeps the village running, and it is what most people do on the flat days.

Welcome home.

Why Tofo?

Empty, warm, and only one of them

Most warm coasts with waves this consistent are full. Tofo is not, and the price of that is distance and a single stretch of beach with no fallback when the wind is wrong. It suits somebody who wants a week without a queue more than somebody who wants a week of waves, and knowing which of those you are is the whole decision.

Where is Tofo?

Getting there

Tofo is a nine-hour drive from Maputo, or a short flight to Inhambane and half an hour more by road. That access is the whole reason the line-ups are what they are, and it is also why almost everybody here has come deliberately rather than passed through.
