Surfing on the Gower
The Gower is a peninsula the size of an afternoon, and it holds the two beaches Welsh surfing runs on. What makes it worth the drive is that they do not want the same swell.

Llangennith faces west and takes the Atlantic straight on: three miles of sand, lefts and rights, best at mid tide, and the beach everyone checks first because if it is flat here it is flat everywhere on this coast. April is its month, at eight clean days out of thirty. Langland Bay, on the south side twenty minutes away, wants a southwest swell and a northerly wind, and it works when the north side does not.
Those are poor numbers by the standards of anywhere warm, and they are the honest shape of surfing here. Langland's best month is two clean days out of thirty. Nobody books a Gower week on the calendar: you watch a chart, you drive on the Friday, and the trip is worth it because it is two hours from most of south Wales rather than a flight.
Water runs from about six degrees in March to sixteen in September, so this is a 4/3 with boots and a hood for half the year and a 3/2 at the top of summer. Swansea is twenty minutes away and has the evenings; the villages on the peninsula itself have a pub and a car park.

Why Gower?
Two windows, one afternoon apart
A single beach in Wales is a gamble on the wind. Two beaches facing different ways on the same peninsula is a plan: when the west side is blown out, the south side is offshore, and checking both costs half an hour. That is the Gower's whole case, and it is the reason this is the one Welsh entry rather than a list of coastlines.

Getting there
The Gower starts twenty minutes west of Swansea, which is two hours from Cardiff and about four from London or Birmingham. Llangennith is at the west end, Langland on the south coast, and the drive between them takes twenty-five minutes.
