Welcome to Ericeira
Ericeira is forty minutes north of Lisbon and it is the only World Surfing Reserve in Europe, a designation that covers about seven kilometres of coast between Empa and São Lourenço. What it means in practice is density: the breaks are close enough together that checking three of them is a walk rather than a drive.
Coxos is the one the reserve was built around, a right over reef that ranks with anything on the continent and is often crowded. Ribeira d'Ilhas is the long, forgiving right the contests use, and it is clean twelve days out of thirty in December, the best figure in the country.
Foz do Lizandro at the southern end is a river mouth, and it is where a first week happens.
Welcome home.
