Welcome to Peniche
Peniche is a fishing town on a peninsula an hour north of Lisbon, and the shape of the land is the whole argument. Because it sticks out, one side of it is almost always sheltered from the wind that ruins the other, which is why people base themselves here rather than at a single beach.
The name it travels on is Supertubos, a barrelling beach break that has held a world tour event and does not forgive. Read its figures before booking a week on the strength of the name: in February, its best month, it is clean one day out of thirty and too small twenty-seven. It needs a serious swell to exist at all.
Praia do Baleal, ten minutes north, is the other half of the town and the reason a beginner can come at all.
Welcome home.
