October is what this coast is known for. The autumn lows are stronger than September's and the banks have not been wrecked by them yet, so for a few weeks the Landes produces waves at a size and a shape nothing else on mainland Europe matches.

The reason sits under the water. The Capbreton canyon opens about three hundred metres off the beach and drops past three thousand, and its head funnels swell onto the north beaches at Hossegor. On the same north-west swell, La Nord gets the energy concentrated and Capbreton, a few hundred metres further south, gets it swallowed. Two beaches within sight of each other, one perfect and one flat, on one forecast.

The weather helps as well. The continental high sits over France often enough in October to hold the wind offshore through the mornings, and at 19°C most sessions still start without gloves.

Learning in October

  • For learning : Good

Biarritz yes, the Landes no. La Côte des Basques still takes a lesson in October; the beaches an hour north are where surfers with five years behind them get held under.

Where a beginner goes in October

These spots are reachable all year. What the month changes is the size of the waves, not the access.

For an experienced surfer

  • Surf : Excellent

The month to plan a year around, with the warning that the banks change under you. Look before you paddle out, every single day.

Where these figures come from

Air, rain and sunshine: WMO / NOAA 1991-2020 normals for Agadir Al Massira, a station some twenty kilometres inland and so a little warmer than the coast in summer. Swell, period and share of workable wind: Swell Archive and surf-forecast. Water temperature: seatemperature.org and weather-and-climate. Crowds and prices are an editorial judgement, not a measurement.
