Surfing in France in February

Surfing in France in February

February is the coldest water of the French year on an empty coast: January's swell, without anybody on it.

Conditions in February

  • Water temp. : 12 °C
  • Wetsuit : 5/4 mm, hood, gloves and boots

February keeps January's weather. The lows keep arriving and the size stays up. What changes is on the beach rather than in the ocean: the towns that overflow in August have their car parks back, and a line-up that holds thirty people in summer holds three.

What ends a session in February is the temperature, not the wave. The sea bottoms out at 12°C towards the end of the month, six weeks after the air has, so the water is at its coldest while the days are already getting longer. A 4/3 will not give you three hours. A 5/4 with a hood, boots and gloves is the difference between one session and two.

The sand keeps moving underneath all of it. Storms rearrange the banks week by week, so a beach that worked on Tuesday can be worth nothing on Friday. February rewards a car and the habit of looking before you unload it.

Learning in February

  • For learning : Off season

Cold and heavy, and most schools are shut. If a first week has to fall in winter, take it in Biarritz rather than in the Landes.

Where a beginner goes in February

These spots are reachable all year. What the month changes is the size of the waves, not the access.

For an experienced surfer

  • Surf : Very good

Winter swell with the whole coast to choose from. Bring the thickest suit you own and plan two short sessions rather than one long one.

Where these figures come from

Air, rain and sunshine: WMO / NOAA 1991-2020 normals for Agadir Al Massira, a station some twenty kilometres inland and so a little warmer than the coast in summer. Swell, period and share of workable wind: Swell Archive and surf-forecast. Water temperature: seatemperature.org and weather-and-climate. Crowds and prices are an editorial judgement, not a measurement.
