Surfing in France in January

January is the middle of the Atlantic storm season, and the month with the worst sand under it: swell nearly every day, on banks the winter has already flattened.

  • Wetsuit : 4/3 mm, boots advised

January sits in the middle of the storm season. Lows cross the Bay of Biscay one after another, the Landes gets swell most days of the month, and the size would make a highlight of the year anywhere else in Europe.

The trouble is what those waves land on. A wave in the Landes is a sandbank, and by January the winter has been moving the sand around for two months: the bars that shaped September's waves are spread flat, so a big swell arrives on an even bottom and closes out down the length of the beach. La Nord takes it better than the rest, because the Capbreton canyon funnels the energy onto one place instead of the kilometre either side of it.

When the Landes shuts, the answer is to drive south. Biarritz and Guéthary break over reef and rock, they keep their shape at a size that ends sandbank surfing, and they are forty minutes away. The water is at 13°C, so a 4/3 and boots.

Learning in January

  • For learning : Off season

Not the month. What reaches the beach in January has already broken twice, and the currents that come with it are strong.

Where a beginner goes in January

These spots are reachable all year. What the month changes is the size of the waves, not the access.

For an experienced surfer

  • Surf : Very good

Size on demand and nobody in the water, if you accept that finding a bank is half of every morning.

Where these figures come from

Air, rain and sunshine: WMO / NOAA 1991-2020 normals for Agadir Al Massira, a station some twenty kilometres inland and so a little warmer than the coast in summer. Swell, period and share of workable wind: Swell Archive and surf-forecast. Water temperature: seatemperature.org and weather-and-climate. Crowds and prices are an editorial judgement, not a measurement.
