Surfing in Panama in June

Surfing in Panama in June

June has the swell running and the rain settled, and the mornings are still the whole trip.

    Very good

June is the wet season proper and the southern swell at a useful size. The pattern is stable enough to plan on: the sky is clear at dawn, the wind is light, and the weather builds through the afternoon into something loud that clears by evening.

Anybody surfing here in the wet half of the year lives on that pattern. Two sessions before ten, a long lunch, and the sea again at five if the sky has finished with it. It is a better arrangement than it sounds, and it is why the wet season does not read as a warning here the way it does in Indonesia or Sri Lanka.

Santa Catalina is at its most reliable in this half of the year in terms of size, which is a different claim from the clean-day figure January carries. The road in is the thing to check: this is the season when the last stretch of it starts asking questions.

Learning in June

  • For learning : Good

Manageable at Venao if the swell is small, and a school will read the day for you. The southern swell can put it beyond a first week without warning.

Where a beginner goes in June

These spots are reachable all year. What the month changes is the size of the waves, not the access.

For an experienced surfer

  • Surf : Very good

Size and consistency together, on a point that lengthens with it. The afternoons belong to the weather rather than to you.

Where these figures come from

Air, rain and sunshine: WMO / NOAA 1991-2020 normals for Agadir Al Massira, a station some twenty kilometres inland and so a little warmer than the coast in summer. Swell, period and share of workable wind: Swell Archive and surf-forecast. Water temperature: seatemperature.org and weather-and-climate. Crowds and prices are an editorial judgement, not a measurement.
