Surfing in Ireland in December

December has swell every week and about seven and a half hours of daylight to use it in. No month of the Irish year leaves a shorter window.

December is not short of waves. The Atlantic is at full production and something is breaking somewhere on the west coast almost every day of the month.

The constraint is the window. At fifty-three degrees north the sun comes up around half past eight and is gone by half past four, and inside those hours the tide, the wind and the drive all have to agree. Two of the three usually do. A December trip is built around getting one good session rather than a good week, and people who come knowing that leave happy more often than people who came for a week of surfing.

The water is at 9°C and falling towards the February floor. Full winter kit, short sessions, and the compensation is a coast with nobody on it and a country that is at its best indoors after dark.

Where a beginner goes in December

These spots are reachable all year. What the month changes is the size of the waves, not the access.

For an experienced surfer

  • Surf : Very good

Serious swell on a seven-hour day. Worth it if you are here anyway; not worth flying for unless the chart is already showing something.

Where these figures come from

Air, rain and sunshine: WMO / NOAA 1991-2020 normals for Agadir Al Massira, a station some twenty kilometres inland and so a little warmer than the coast in summer. Swell, period and share of workable wind: Swell Archive and surf-forecast. Water temperature: seatemperature.org and weather-and-climate. Crowds and prices are an editorial judgement, not a measurement.
