Surfing in Ireland in February

February is the coldest water Ireland has, and the month where the wetsuit decides how long the trip actually lasts.

Conditions in February

  • Water temp. : 8 °C
  • Wetsuit : 5/4 mm, hood, gloves and boots

February repeats January's weather with one difference that matters more than it sounds. The sea reaches its floor of 8°C at the end of the month, and on this coast that number is not a detail of comfort: it is the length of the session.

The arithmetic is worth doing before booking. In a 5/4 with a hood, most people get ninety minutes in February and then need an hour in the car with the heater on. Two sessions a day is optimistic; one long one does not exist. A week here is five or six hours in the water, and that is the honest version of what a February trip buys.

The swell is at its annual maximum and so is the wind. That combination puts the good days at the mercy of a forecast that turns over every two days, which is why people who come in February come for ten days rather than for five.

Learning in February

  • For learning : Off season

No, and this is the month it matters most. The cold alone will end a first lesson before anything is learned.

Where a beginner goes in February

These spots are reachable all year. What the month changes is the size of the waves, not the access.

For an experienced surfer

  • Surf : Very good

The heaviest month of the Irish year, and the one where the kit list is the difference between a trip and a story about the weather.

Where these figures come from

Air, rain and sunshine: WMO / NOAA 1991-2020 normals for Agadir Al Massira, a station some twenty kilometres inland and so a little warmer than the coast in summer. Swell, period and share of workable wind: Swell Archive and surf-forecast. Water temperature: seatemperature.org and weather-and-climate. Crowds and prices are an editorial judgement, not a measurement.
